Tenor Oli's departure from the group

It’s with a heavy heart that we announce that our tenor, Oli, will be leaving us in August. He’s been a dedicated, warm and vibrant presence in the group for over half our years of existence, and we will miss him more than we can say.

Here’s a message from Oli:

Being part of Apollo5 has meant that I’ve been able to realise my dream job of being a singer. The freedom and responsibility in the music-making, as well as singing in all the genres that Apollo5 offers, is so rare an opportunity in this industry and I’m so grateful to have been able to perform at this level. Particular standout moments include: singing through a thunderstorm in the pouring rain in France; Josh and I being dragged into doing karaoke for St Patrick’s day in the middle of nowhere in North Dakota; and making my Wigmore Hall debut with the group. But – as they say – sadly all good things come to an end, although I hope my new chapter will not take me too far away from this wonderful group of singers. I have to thank many people: my friends for life in Apollo5, Voces8 and the Foundation for all the experience and joy I’ve experienced over the past seven or so years. See you all again soon. x

Latest Album | Haven

Haven, the sixth solo studio album from Apollo5, explores the music and poetry of troubled, displaced and persecuted authors, from the Tudor musician William Byrd – who secretly continued a commitment to Catholicism at the height of the Protestant Reformation – to Romantic poets, twentieth-century songwriters and contemporary Ukrainian composers currently writing in exile.

Haven is released on 20 October 2023 and the group will perform an album launch concert at St James’s Piccadilly on 19 October 2023, 7:30pm

Apollo5: Ubi Caritas by Ola Gjeilo

Set to music by contemporary Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo, this eighth-century text is one of the antiphons used for the washing of feet on Maundy Thursday. The recording is taken from recent album Invocations, for which each member of Apollo5 picked a song (or two) to encapsulate their individual ‘life soundtracks’. 'Ubi Caritas' is tenor Oli Martin-Smith’s choice, which for him summons deep feelings of nostalgia. New Album Invocations

Apollo5 Invocations

Apollo5’s studio album, Invocations, was born out of the group’s desire to share fragments of their life stories with audiences, and to encourage listeners to discover their ‘life music’ too. Alongside long-term collaborator Fraser Wilson, Apollo5’s singers individually hand-picked songs and texts that have emotionally resonated with them over the course of their lives; the songs selected were then reworked by Fraser into brand new versions. This colourful melange of melody is Apollo5’s most personal project yet, accentuating the power of music as a soundtrack to a life.

Invocations was released on 10 March 2023 on VOCES8 Records.

Alongside this, a clamoured for re-showing of its 5* The Times reviewed Bach B Minor Mass, filmed at St Bartholomew the Great with the Academy of Ancient Music, Carolyn Sampson, Iestyn Davies, Jeremy Budd and Matthew Brook – both under the baton of Barnaby Smith.
