Education

Apollo5 is part of the charitable foundation Voces Cantabiles Music (the VCM Foundation), and is involved in its innovative education programme aiming to inspire creativity through music.

The foundation’s annual programme of education work reaches more than 40,000 young people each year in partnership with Music Hubs, schools and other educational organisations. The programme provides teacher training, a unique Young Leaders programme, residencies with schools and communities in the UK, France Germany and the USA, as well as regular events at the Gresham Centre.

The Gresham Centre

The Gresham Centre is located in the Wren church of St Anne and St Agnes on Gresham Street and is a venue for numerous outreach programmes, teacher training events, rehearsal days, recordings and concerts.

Apollo5’s Education Projects

Apollo5 leads workshops for people of all ages and abilities. Projects are designed in consultation with teachers, choir leaders or workshop organisers involved and the group moves comfortably from sessions with primary school children to coaching experienced choirs.

As Ensemble in Residence with Surrey Arts, Apollo5 works with children and adults with special needs and leads an innovative Young Leaders Programme. Now in it’s fifth year, the Young Leaders Programme in Surrey has helped over 500 secondary students build their confidence and develop teamwork and leadership skills through music.

Apollo5 also oversees an extensive outreach project called the Open Mind Programme in Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Newham. Now in its second year, the Open Mind Programme has worked with 44 primary schools, 7 secondary schools and the borough Youth Choirs. The programme is supported by the Arts Council, The Merchant Taylors’ Company and the Worshipful Company of Plaisterers.

Summer School at Ardingly College

Apollo5 joins VOCES8 for the VOCES8 summer school focusing specifically on a cappella choral singing. The group leads the Childrens’ Course for ages 8 to 13. Participants will learn and perform jazz and pop a cappella, create and perform a brand new work, and participate in a professional recording session to make a short CD to take away as a memento.

  • The workshops were excellent. I think they were really demanding and challenging for us all on different levels. I was really pleased that they provided a CPD opportunity for staff as well as the learning done by the children.

  • I had heard about the VOCES8 method but had never seen it in action. It was exhilarating to watch our students engaging in this dynamic teaching method; it was an inspiration both for our choir and for me.

  • Apollo5 were superb – they captured the interest and imagination of our boys providing them with oodles of inspiration and enthusiasm for choral singing. Not only are they inspirational educators and effective practitioners, but also FINE musicians.

  • There was a real buzz about the whole day, and lots of happy, happy (and exhausted!) people who left asking for more. You were amazing!
